Funding Feminist Community-led Climate Initiatives

The Gender-Just Climate Solutions Scale Fund provides flexible, feminist funding to community-led climate initiatives that are already delivering impact but lack access to traditional finance. 

Through regranting, technical accompaniment, and advocacy, we help frontline organizations strengthen, sustain, and scale their work.

The Scale Fund builds on nearly a decade of learning from the Gender-Just Climate Solutions Awards and responds directly to what grassroots organizations have told us they need to grow their impact on their own terms.

Why This Fund Matters

Feminist solutions to the climate crisis exist in every region of the world. These initiatives improve livelihoods, strengthen resilience, protect ecosystems, and advance rights. Yet they remain chronically underfunded and excluded from dominant climate finance systems that favor large, top-down, and market-driven approaches.

Without accessible and flexible funding, many of the most effective local solutions are unable to sustain or expand their work. Shifting climate finance toward justice requires new funding models that trust communities and center care, equity, and self-determination.

How We Work

Through the Scale Fund, we:

• Provide flexible regranting to feminist and community-led climate initiatives
• Offer technical accompaniment tailored to each organization’s needs, including institutional strengthening and communications support
• Operate participatory and relational funding practices through a regranting collective
• Build learning across funding rounds to inform advocacy on feminist climate finance
• Elevate funded solutions in policy and donor spaces to demonstrate what just climate action looks like

The Scale Fund is coordinated by WEDO and guided by a regranting collective that includes Women Engage for a Common Future, Women Environmental Programme, and FEMNET.

Enabling Frontline Climate Organizations

The Scale Fund enables frontline organizations to strengthen their operations, expand their reach, and influence policy without compromising their values or autonomy. It also helps demonstrate how feminist funding practices can move resources more effectively to the local level.

By pairing funding with accompaniment, the Fund supports solutions that are resilient, replicable, and grounded in community leadership.

Impact to Date

Since launching in 2021, the Scale Fund has:

• Led eight rounds of direct funding
• Regranted approximately USD 810,000
• Supported 54 recipients across 33 countries

Funded initiatives span locally led adaptation, disaster risk reduction, agroecology, forestry, energy justice, and advocacy with many organizations working at the intersection of gender, climate, and disability justice.

Toward Funding a Feminist Climate Finance Ecosystem

The Scale Fund is more than a regranting mechanism. It is a platform for demonstrating how climate finance can work differently.

We use the Fund to advocate for greater scale, accessibility, and flexibility in climate finance, and to encourage donors to adopt feminist funding principles such as unrestricted support, participatory decision making, and long-term accompaniment.

How the Scale Fund Connects to Our Broader Work

The Scale Fund moves money toward justice while reinforcing power and narrative shifts led by communities. It complements our advocacy and systems change work by grounding policy debates in real solutions that are already working.
