As negotiations on the renewed Gender Action Plan (GAP) intensify at COP30, advocates warn that coordinated efforts to delay, weaken, or reinterpret long-standing commitments to gender equality pose a threat to climate ambition.

Date: 19 November 2025
Time: 2:00–2:30 p.m.
Location: Press Conference Room 2, COP30 Venue

What:
As negotiations on the renewed Gender Action Plan (GAP) intensify at COP30, advocates warn that coordinated efforts to delay, weaken, or reinterpret long-standing commitments to gender equality pose a threat to climate ambition. This press briefing will provide an up-to-the-minute overview of where negotiations stand, outline concerning trends, and reiterate why a strong, coherent, and well-resourced GAP is vital for effective climate action.

Why it Matters:
Since COP7 in 2010, Parties have consistently affirmed that gender equality is essential to climate policy. Last year, they renewed the Lima Work Programme on Gender for 10 years. With the Amazon at the center of the climate crisis, delivering a robust GAP in Belém is critical for communities on the frontlines, especially women, Indigenous Peoples, and local defenders.

Who:

  • Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland and Member of The Elders
  • Bridget Burns, Executive Director, Women’s Environment & Development Organization (WEDO)
  • Mwanahamisi (Mishi) Singano, Director of Policy, Women’s Environment & Development Organization (WEDO)
  • Michelle Ferreti, Instituto Alziras (Brazil)

Speakers will address:

  • The political state of play on GAP negotiations
  • Backlash against gender equality and rights language across the UNFCCC
  • What a strong GAP can deliver for Parties and for frontline communities
  • Why delivery in Amazonia is an urgent political and moral imperative
